Switching from a diet that consists of meat to a vegetarian diet can be quite a challenging and daunting proposition.  Changing one’s diet is not just as simple as altering your grocery list, but it requires a change in lifestyles as well.  When you have made the conscious decision to make the switch to a vegetarian diet, it’s important to take things slowly and give yourself some breathing room.

Eliminating red meat from your diet

Before eliminating meat from your diet altogether, you may want to start by removing the most unhealthful part of your diet: red meats.  Red meats are usually high in fat, sodium and bad cholesterol, three major causes of heart disease, high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, among other risks.  If you want to have a diet that will help you reduce fat, sodium and cholesterol, try removing red meats from your diet and slowly start substituting red meat with vegetarian or white meat foods.  For example, instead of going for a large steak or a fatty burger, you may want to get turkey or vegetable-based products instead.  By making the transition slow and steady, you are more likely to stick to your vegetarian ways and reach your health and diet goals.

Making a more sudden shift to vegetarianism

For some people, switching to a vegetarian diet isn’t necessarily a matter of personal preference, but it is more a matter of health.  Those who have had health scares or are battling conditions, like cardiovascular conditions or diabetes, usually have to make sudden and drastic changes to their diet by switching to vegetarianism.  The health benefits of vegetarian diets are well-documented and becoming a vegetarian can greatly reduce medical risks.  If you are forced to make a sudden change to vegetarianism, you should try to get educated about vegetarian foods.  You may want to start by choosing meaty types vegetarian products, such as mushrooms, so you don’t feel as though you are making too drastic of a change.  Try to mix up the types of vegetables, fruits, and legumes that you buy so you can try different textures, food types and recipes.  It’s easy to get bored of a new diet if you are eating the same types of meals repetitively, so give yourself a wide variety of choices.
