Many people are well-aware of the numerous benefits of drinking milk, such as its high content of vitamins and minerals.  Did you know that there are also a number of downsides to drinking milk?  Read on to learn more about why you may want to consider removing milk and other dairy products from your diet.

Drinking milk – the good

For many years, milk has often been advertised as one of the best sources of calcium and essential vitamins for the body.  Not only does milk help strengthen your bones and your teeth, but it also provides a number of vitamins and minerals that help keep your body strong.  For this reason, people have often thought of milk as a good deterrent to osteoporosis and other bone-related complications.

Drinking milk – the bad

Unfortunately, the disadvantages of drinking milk can outweigh the advantages.  Milk and other dairy products are high in fat and cholesterol, which means that having too much dairy in your diet can lead to high cholesterol and fat levels – much like red meat.  This means that consuming too much dairy products can result in cardiovascular disease.  Another downside of drinking milk is that it can increase your risk of bone fracture.  Because the calcium received from milk is not well-suited for protecting the bones, people think that their bones are getting strong, when they are actually at a higher risk of fracturing.  Various types of cancers, like ovarian, breast and prostate cancers, have also been linked to dairy product consumption.

Removing milk from your diet

The best solution to this problem is to reduce or completely remove dairy products from your diet and to substitute such products with vegetarian foods.  Vegetarian foods that are high in calcium and other nutrients are great for a balanced diet that will keep you lean and healthy.  You may also want to backup your diet with a good exercise regiment to increase the strength of your body.  Avoid the pitfalls of consuming too much dairy products by replacing dairy and other unhealthful foods with vegetarian substitutes instead.
