Get Your Family Switched Over to a Vegetarian Diet
May 21st, 2009
Making the switch from an omnivorous diet to a vegetarian diet is not that easy. It takes a lot of will power and discipline to make the decision to go vegetarian and to follow through with it. If you have been able to make the transition to a vegetarian diet, you may want to convince your children to do so as well. One of the best ways to care for your family’s well-being is to set them on a diet that is healthy for the body, mind and soul – just like a vegetarian diet.
Going vegetarian in this day and age
These days, it can be very difficult to get your children to switch to a vegetarian diet. Many of us live in societies where eating meat has become the norm. Fast food restaurants, cafes, gourmet restaurants and all types of food outlets offer meaty products that entice children and adults alike. So what are you to do when these restaurants are popping up with their Happy Meals, meaty pizzas and jumbo burgers? The answer is to take it one step at a time.
A step-by-step transition
Instead of trying to force your vegetarian ways upon your children and family members, you should try to make the transition slowly and steadily. You may want to start out by telling them your personal experience and why you decided to switch over to a vegetarian diet. Explain how it makes you feel better physically, mentally and, perhaps, even spiritually. The next step is to introduce them to the different types of vegetarian foods. Bring your children along with you to the grocery and tell them about the different vegetables, fruits, berries, grains and legumes. It’s important to get them well-informed and well-educated about food and what they are putting into their bodies. Finally, slowly start to add more vegetarian foods to their diet and reduce the amount of meats that they have. Try to gauge their reaction to see how they like it.
If you want, you can even have a discussion with your children about how this change in their diet is also a way of treating animals with kindness, sympathy and respect. Switching to a vegetarian lifestyle is a great way to live and anyone on a vegetarian diet can feel better about themselves physically, mentally and spiritually.
